Septic Tank Dye Test

A septic dye test is a non-invasive investigation that is used to determine the condition of a home’s waste system. This test can expose obvious leaks and inadequacies in the system and indicate the need for repairs or alterations.

Septic systems and repairs can be costly. It is always a good idea to have this test if a septic tank/system is present on the property and the home is not vacant. If you are walking the property of a home with a septic system and see standing groundwater after dry periods, there is a good chance there is some type of septic problem. This test can help find costly problems, but it is not a guarantee that there are not any problems with the septic system.

RHI uses a fluorescent dye that is introduced into the septic system. The special dye is flushed down a toilet or another drain. The dye is then “traced” to be sure that the septic system can handle the volume of waste that is currently being put through it. If dye is located, this indicates the system is not working properly. There must be enough water to put an absorption system “to work.” Therefore, vacant houses cannot be tested using this method. This test can take up to 5 days to complete.
